The Seacoast community joined together to create opportunity for young women in high school through the Phenomenal Women Project, an Arts In Reach afterschool program.
My picture has a face
The water, smooth as a waterfall
A view of the bottom of the stream
The reflections are green with blue swirl
One branch to help your mind find its way
back into your head
Every detail of every rock
Every fish if you’re patient
You’ll catch a glimpse of as it passes by
Every leaf, its green nearly gone,
its skeleton holding strong, embracing and holding on
That rock face will eat its way out
I’m so small but so powerful

Love
Love is open,
Love is free,
Like a stallion over the land
Racing the hawk
Thinking it could take flight
Any minute,
Any second,
But keeping its hooves on the ground
Safe and sound

Was it a sign?
A sign that I found my forever home?
If it is,
I will plant my feet firmly on the ground,
Never to leave, always to stay,
I will explore
While the seasons change,
While my fondness grows,
My heart never changes,
My feet still firmly on the ground,
For it was a sign,
And I shall know when I have to go.

Standing in the Eye of the Storm
Accepted.
I am no longer alone.
I found that gap, my tunnel of freedom.
The gap that led me here,
The Isle of Misfits.
The others have welcomed me with open arms,
Like an old friend returning after a long time away.
Here,
You don’t have to wear a mask,
You don’t have to pretend.
You can be yourself.
No one else.
Just you.
This paradise inside the chaotic crowd of actors and actresses.
You can express yourself here, no ploys, no lines to perform.
No following the orders of the so called “director.”
There are boys and girls and others alike here.
Hair that ranges to every spectrum of the rainbow.
Here,
You can be creative, funny, unique.
You can be you.
You can be noticed.
You can be heard.
No masks, no makeup
No scripts to follow.
In this Isle of Misfits,
This beacon of hope,
The Eye of the Storm,
I can be…
ME.

The Complexity of Trees
Forest in metamorphosis
Deep monochromatic green
To firey shades of orange, red, yellow
Teenaged leaves look their color from the sun
Dyed their hair
Comfortable surroundings
Specks of
Calming green
Fire hues
Searching for voices
Green whispers,
“content, no desire to change”
warmer side of rainbow booms
“rebelling against nature’s assignment”
Me
Love essence of soul, heart’s core
Revelations? No thank you
Wait-
Don’t want to go incognito
Rejecting nature’s given role
Now
Metamorphosing into duality
I am enough.

Fishing
As I stand
Watching my pole
Every detail I see
A pair of
Eyes would find
Magnanimous
Every rock in its
Own place, I sit
Watching the
Water go in out in
Out between
The things.
But I focus, focus on
On the movement,
Movement of
the fish I
hope to catch
they move swift
their many colors
catch the sun
But I sit
and wait
for something
to bite
as I
watch
life.

Nature of People
People and nature are more alike than different
Life is just too beautiful to destroy
Yet, we surprisingly destroy what is beautiful every day
We need to be
Nourished
Loved
Respected

The Dedication to Stargirl Poem
Unpredictable like the weather
Fascinating like a colorful peacock
Elusive like a dream catcher
Contradictory like sun during a rainstorm
Optimistic like a rainbow
Harmonic like a melodic tune
Vulnerable like an ocean wave
Emotional like a mosaic painting
Nurturing like a river
Eccentric like a cactus in a snowstorm
Unbreakable
Like a queen who won’t give up her throne
Is she real?
Is she too good to be true?
She is as real as day and night
I always found it easier to put people in boxes
Until now
She changed all of that for me.
-Jennifer S.
Don’t Follow
There once was an ant named Joe
Who looked for food
By following an ant named Moe
Who had a good sense of smell
But what Joe didn’t know
Was that Moe
Was using his sense of smell
To follow an ant named Mel
Who didn’t like to lead
So he followed an ant named Pete
Without knowing that
Pete was following Pat
Who didn’t have much in his head
And followed his best friend Fred
Not knowing much
As they went in a line
Of who was in front
And who was behind
It was easy to tell
Yet they did not know
Fred
Was led
By Joe

Warm air
Wind whispers
Moist moss mumbles
Things that you
Hurriedly hush
Attempting avoidance
Leaves laugh
Roots rumble
Green grass gossips
Secrets so often
Rudely rejected
Bark breathes
Soil shakes
Sun soaked skin
Grows goosebumps
Suddenly startled
Beautiful bird song
-Lauren B.
Leaves rebel against trees like a
Teenage girl rebels against her mother.
Wind blows and the tree stands its ground.
Leaves push away.
The stronger the wind, the stronger the rebellion.
It stops, then starts again.
Some are gone, but some will stay, until fall comes
Once again
And the leaves get older and
Leave home.
They find a new place in the earth to settle
Down, meet new things
Although memories of its home tree
Still stand.

Fire in the Eyes
One eye sees the flame
The flame that glows through the night
The ocean guides the flame
Sea Subway
Carrying color fish
I cannot be a couch-bug
I am a current
I am An Angler Fish
I carry my own light
I’ll never run into dark
I am an angler fish
-Katya L.
While walking forward I turn around.
Start looking at the bottom,
then look up.
First, hard cold ground
layered with snow,
Looking up, a light
a light of energy
I stop there,
think about it.
A sign,
telling me where to go?
I start walking.
