Backstage Pass: The 2019-2020 Performance Project!

Our Performance Project teens have been hard at work, rehearsing and refining their original adaptation of The Madwoman of Chaillot. They are so excited to share this collaborative piece of theatre at the showcase performances next week.

While all AIR programs have an element of collaboration, the Performance Project is by far our most collaborative! Three professional artists hailing from three artistic disciplines instruct our teens in the realms of theatre, dance and design.

At the beginning of each program we work to create an inclusive community of mutual respect and kindness. This environment encourages safe experimentation and helps our teens to feel comfortable trying something new! At AIR we refer to healthy risk-taking as, “jumping off safe bridges.”

Once community was cultivated amongst our Performance Project teens, we dived into an exercise called “Artistic Aspirations” to determine creative interests. Each teen was given two Post-Its and asked to put them on large sheets of paper, under aspects of theatre, dance and design that they feel comfortable with (“I got this!”) and areas that they’d like to explore (“I wanna try this!”). They were also given a third Post-It with another teen’s name on it. They were instructed to briefly chat with that person to get a sense of their interests and then to put their name under an area they encouraged them to try.

Since identifying interests and experience level in our group, parts have been assigned, blocking has been discerned, mazurka dances choreographed and, props and backdrops designed. We are eight days away from opening night and our teens have the focus and determination to deliver a strong performance. We hope that this program instills a new confidence in our teens, and that the spirit of experimentation promoted by “Artistic Aspirations” carries with them beyond AIR.
