Introducing The Writers’ Workshop
Last month Arts in Reach premiered its new pilot program: Writers’ Workshop. The first session was held at Teatotaller in Somersworth, and was co-facilitated by two writers that are very connected to AIR…. our Program Director, Becca Romanoski and Executive Director, Deb Holloway!
The workshop began with an opening circle where we introduced ourselves and shared our favorite writers and literary genres.
Next, Deb led us in a writing warm-up inspired by a collection of poems called, Becoming Bread by Gunilla Norris. We were asked to free write for 5-10 minutes using “bread” as a theme. The teens were encouraged to write freely and were asked not to edit or cross out words. When it came time to stop, Deb shared some great advice. She advised stopping in the middle of a sentence, so that when you resume writing, you’ll have somewhere to start!
The remainder of the workshop was spent in open writing studio. The teens wrote excitedly over coffee, tea and pastries. Many of the teens continued with the carbohydrate theme, while some wrote about mythical creatures and narratives for original characters. The teens had the opportunity to share excerpts from their work at the end of the session.
We are excited to see how this program progresses! Our next workshop will be held on January 5, 2020 from 2-4pm at Avalon North in Dover. This session will feature guest author, Lisa Bunker!
