AIR’s February Vacation Voice Intensive program is a program that focuses on singing, musical theatre, and performance. In addition to learning songs, participants were asked to think critically about the content of the songs they sang during the program. Teens were also asked questions related to this years theme, Still We Rise: Cultivating Courage. Our program director compiled the teen’s writings to create a collaborative piece for each of the prompts. These final pieces were then read during their final performance, the compilation process allowed the teens to share their thoughts on important and sensitive topics in a safe and meaningful way. The piece below was created from writing prompts related to our year’s theme.

Even though you may think I’m weak, or don’t believe in me, I will rise.

Still I rise, stronger than I was before.

Still I rise, using what I have gained through my mistakes.

Still I rise from the ashes to prove myself.

I rise above depression, I rise triumphantly.

I rise courageously, proudly, honorably, still I rise.

Every time that you reach out you’re a little less alone.

Every time you love your family you’re a little less alone.

Every time the birds chirp you’re a little less alone.

Every time you express yourself  you’re a little less alone.

Every time you need to cry you’re a little less alone.

Every time you hug a friend you’re a little less alone

Every time the music plays you’re a little less alone.
