Cantey Smith

“It is so important to practice believing in yourself through all phases of life”

Cantey Smith is our new Program development Americorps VISTA, she began her year of service with Arts In Reach this past August. Cantey grew up right here on the Seacoast and attended high school at Cocheco Arts and Technology Academy in Dover. Cantey has been involved in the seacoast arts community since she was a child and was able to also become a part of a new arts community in New York when she attended The New School for Liberal Arts in 2016.

Cantey has been involved with and created a variety of art forms. She interned as a show host and co-op organizer with Radio Free Brooklyn; wrote for a student-led online newspaper; she was President of The New School Zine Publishing Collective, and made her own collaborative volume of zines. Cantey loves to sing and play guitar, practice audio production and record her own music; she also produced an ethnographic podcast for her Senior Thesis.

When asked what AIR means to her, Cantey said, “Equal access to artistic forms of self-expression, learning opportunities, and community building.” At AIR we are using the arts to give our teens a place to foster their creativity, collaborate with each other to create, and cultivate healthy self-expression for our teens. All of these parts of our program wouldn’t be possible without the AIR Staff, we are so happy to have Cantey on our staff for the next year to help us in that process.
